In early 2020, eight jurors selected 10 outstanding artists from the Philadelphia area for InLiquid’s first ever Wind Fellowships. In September, 2020 InLiquid presented the artists’ work at the InLiquid Gallery as a culmination of their Fellowships. This viewing room is presented as a companion exhibition, celebrating the diverse work and practices of the artists.
Their work explores themes surrounding identity and identity politics, memories, place, and materiality. The fellowships recognize each artist’s exceptional work, and promote their artistic practices to new audiences through InLiquid and the Dina Wind Art Foundation.

HAZZIZA ABDULLAH
"I investigate the different ways that Black women are often represented and seen, and how Black women sometimes see themselves. I’m interested in unconventional displays of beauty that challenge and counter the distorted imagery of Black women based on a Eurocentric gaze...I [bring] a voice to the voiceless..."

CASSIDY ARGO
"Through painting, [I use] the figure in space to create compelling narratives that raise questions...[my] paintings lovingly reflect a haunted childhood. By setting up nostalgic scenes infused with eerie and paranormal elements [I aim] to create a blend between comfort and discomfort."

DANIEL CLARK
"My work is a collection of objects, moments, spaces and memories...Ideas of emptiness, solitude and self reflection are presented with dramatic beauty in highly fanciful compositions that create great contrasts of perception and content."

AMY COUSINS
"I look to archives and material culture to locate revolutionary potential within tightly policed narratives and objects, and explore what it means to look at this potential through contemporary lenses of intersectional feminism and queer ecology...I work with textures like faux fur, pleather, papier-mâché as a way to honor legacies of thrift store, self-fashioned queer decadence as well as the historic role of craft within social movements."

Amy Cousins
Heirloom, 2021
Papier mache and fabric, 30 x 38 x 38”
-
KEVIN HETZEL
"I am constantly questioning, exploring, and investigating the fabric of my own individuality and my experience within the world. It becomes clear that the historic context of cultural influences and genealogy have shaped my interiority of identity."
-
SARAH KAIZAR
"I started creating illustrations in the last few years for a lot of practical reasons such as space and materials but I honestly really enjoy that tight hyper focus that’s required to make work like that...I think when I sat down and began to draw and reflect on these places that offered me such meaningful cover and community it was really emotional and the work just started to take shape."

SUJI KANNEGANTI
"I work intuitively and experimentally, often avoiding preconceived framework, with the intention of channeling something deeper that exists beyond language and logic. My hope is for the artwork to stir something within viewers through a window of open-ended honesty. My hope is for viewers to explore that stirred space within themselves in order to connect to our physical worlds and one another more deeply."

Passing Thought, 2020
Poplar, gold, 30 x 30 x 2”

YIXUAN PAN
"Within the current global political climate, in which people are alienated from each other, it’s time to listen. Translation is a conversational process. It not only facilitates cross-cultural encounters, but more importantly creates mistakes and hope for dialogues."

MOLLIE SCHAIDT
"I was taught when I was younger that refractions and reflections of light were angels. When my brother died, my mother put this film on the window in his room. Currently, I live in the room where he died because I have no where else to stay. He comes to visit everyday when the light hits the wall."

NHI VO
"There is a certain type of discipline present in my work. Each piece has the image of obsession; a narrative of accumulation of small acts carried out over an extended period of time. Lately, I have been transforming writing into drawings as I address texts as images...The agglomerate subjects often lose their legibility resulting in autonomous image(s)."
