1984 Wind Challenge Artist
Artist, educator and curator Jo Yarrington explores optical phenomena and what lies at the threshold of perception - how one navigates the spaces between what is real and what is imagined. In site-referential installations, mixed-media environments and artist books she investigates how light travels and the mutable interplay between reflection and refraction. Recent projects have focused on political power and its impact on the environment, the nuanced inter-weavings of art and science, and the relationship between language, image and materiality.
Yarrington has been in over 350 solo and group exhibitions in galleries and museums in the United States, Germany, Italy, Scotland, Mexico, Iceland, Greece and China. She has been the recipient of numerous national and international Artist Fellowships and grants from, among others, the Pollock Krasner Foundation, the New York Foundation for the Arts, the Connecticut Commission on the Arts, the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, the American Scandinavian Foundation, MacDowell, SIMS/ Iceland, Cill Rialaig/Ireland, the Museum of Glass, the Ucross Foundation, the Virginia Center for Creative Arts and the Museum of American Glass. She represented the United States at the Sharjah Biennial, United Arab Emirates and was a participant in the Berlin Biennial. In 2010 she won the Bronze Prize at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Skopje, Macedonia. Jo Yarrington currently lives and works in New York City and is a Professor of Studio Art in the Department of Visual and Performing Arts at Fairfield University.
