Kara Ja'Nice Mshinda is a visual artist born and raised in Columbus, Ohio. After graduating from The University of Akron with a degree in Interdisciplinary Anthropology, she relocated to Philadelphia to continue her studies at Temple University.

Her work captures the dynamic essence of daily living—from the documentary of urban life to the uninhibited movement of children at play, to her use of fashion magazines as elements of material culture. While subjects in her artwork vary, the overarching theme in Mshinda's work is the power of the feminine gaze and the surrealism of perspective.

Currently serving as Fellowship and Residency Director at Da Vinci Art Alliance and an active member of Tiger Strikes Asteroid, Mshinda remains deeply engaged with Philadelphia's art community. As a Principal Collaborator of GrioXArts, a studio-based art space at Cherry Street Pier, she focuses on building community through process-based art education, creating opportunities for others to discover their own creative voices.

As a visual anthropologist and collage artist, my practice exists at the intersection of documentary and creative expression. I explore the boundaries of traditional photographic representation through methodologies that embrace both analog and digital processes, creating layered visual narratives that speak to the complexity of human experience. - Kara Mshinda

This collection explores the face and hands, sensuality, and expressions of femininity as elements of desire. Inspired by Ball culture and the significance of the face in "vogue femme" dance performance, these pieces transform imagery sourced from contemporary fashion magazines into new narratives of identity and expression.

    ASSEMBLED PRESENCE

    Gerard Silva, Curator

    Fleisher Art Memorial

Kara Mshinda’s work is a visual poetry of life. Her work evokes the music of the jazz modern masters of the 50’s where the rules were broken, reinvented, new sounds were improvised, influences were welcome and our minds were transported to a visceral world.
  • Kara’s oeuvre is constantly in motion, just like our world. Her work includes collage, drawings, portraiture, alternative photo processes and more. Her inspiration is always evolving in a quiet, yet impactful manner, reflecting on her surroundings and funneling a deeply personal narrative.

After all, Mshinda holds a degree as a Visual Anthropologist and she explores the world through a cultural lens, amplifying the beauty of marginalized communities through her imagination and inspiring a change of narratives and perceptions.

It makes total sense that graffiti was part of her development as an artist, as this art form has an important anthropologic value in our current society. Graffiti is one of the most accessible forms of art and Kara's visual collaged landscapes, like graffiti or jazz music, are fluid versions of a fantastic surrealist world, which is the world we currently inhabit. In her world, we are all getting tagged!

The parallels between Kara’s and Dina Wind’s bodies of work are quite obvious. By assembling and repurposing elements existing in our world, they both reconstruct beautiful new fractured realities and perspectives into artworks with an everlasting effect.

Around the Way, 2022, Scanograph printed on archival paper, 18 x 24"
This series explores the beauty of fractured reality following social disasters like Quarantine and Hurricane Katrina. Shot entirely on 35mm film, these pieces document intimate moments while acknowledging the disruption of community bonds during periods of isolation and displacement.

I printed my photographs as transparencies, cut them into various shapes, and reassembled each image on a scanner. The resulting images are neither factual nor false, but reframe ideas of community, discovery, and the built environment.
