Since 2022, Grounds for Sculpture has been partnering the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen (TASK) and the Trenton Community A-Team (TCAT) to foster their creative arts program.
With help from The Dina Wind Art Foundation, Grounds for Sculpture has offered TASK artists the opportunity to participate in high-level art classes at no cost. This program has given space for the artists to develop their technical skills and creative expression, as well as be featured in an exhibition in Grounds For Sculpture's Education Gallery opening July 12, 2024. We are proud to continue to support this program and promote art accessibility to all.
Adult and Family Ceramics Workshops
In 2022, GFS presented work by Philadelphia-based ceramicist, performance artist, and educator Roberto Lugo. Following a residency at GFS in February and March where he created new work, the exhibition Roberto Lugo: The Village Potter opened in May. Concurrent with Roberto Lugo: The Village Potter was a group exhibition Fragile: Earth created by The Color Network (TCN), an international collective of ceramic artists of color. This exhibit embodied the TCN mission to aid in the advancement of people of color in the ceramic arts through exhibitions, community events, and mentorship.
With your support, in 2022, we were able to offer scholarships to 70 individuals to participate in two workshops in partnership with The Color Network. The first, entitled Fragile: Soul, focused on adults who identify as living with depression, anxiety, PTSD, or who are a veteran or person of color. Fragile: Soul featured three workshops led by Sarah Petty: Creating a Safe Container, Exploring Breath & Rhythm while Coiling, and Getting Beyond Perfectionism & Rigidity. The second series, Fragile: Voice, was a Spanish-speaking program for families and adults focused on immigration and family stories. Instructor Natalia Arbelaez shared her work and a brief art history survey and then led a hands-on workshop for 40 participants to transcribe their own history into clay.
One aim of our adult studio and ceramics initiative is to provide more access for adults to learn new skills and have a resource in the region to study sculpture. As you can see, your support was instrumental in expanding our audiences, developing our programs, and broadening our scope of work. Thank you again for your generous support, it allowed us to explore options for scholarship places in workshops, utilizing new equipment and furthering our goals to make GFS a place for adults to experience the arts.
